LIBRARYTHING,ETC.

We use Librarything on our library website with success. I therefore opened a Shelfari account to play with for this course. It had many similar features to LibraryThing but I liked the visual appeal of it better than LibraryThing. It is great to be able to interact and see what others are reading, their opinions, etc. Kind of like a worldwide bookclub! I doubt however I'll keep up a Shelfari or similar program for a personal library however. Over the years I've set up an Excel system that is working fine for my needs, however it does lack the "visuals" of the other programs. It is about all I have the time for additional input to keep up another website.

INSTANT MESSAGING

I first began instant messaging in 1998 when my sons introduced me to it. This was via the ICQ. About that time I had tried also the IRC. Presently I am using the Yahoo Messenger and Facebook chat services for personal use. At work we are using the Meebo chat system. This is used as an "Ask the Librarian" service for our students. I find all three have their uses. Meebo is fast becoming a library mainstay.

MICROBLOGGING

I had initially opened a Twitter acount two years ago just to peek what it was all about. I wasn't "sold" on it then. I do have eight Tweets I'm following. These are all news and professional related. I do not see any need for me to have a personal tweet or a desire to keep up on other personal Twitters. The handout on PLNs was interesting. I do find that majority of the Twitter microblogs I can sign up for via Facebook and am quite happy that route in following.

TAGGING & SOCIAL BOOKMARKING

I have had a Delicious account for several years. It has been quite handy as I am a voluminous bookmarker. I do find myself getting into lapse periods not keeping it up however so it is good to be "reminded" to update/consolidate the bookmarks I have on various computers.

I have enjoyed looking over the other programs such as Zotero, EndNote, and Citeulike. All have great value in academics. The Stumpleupon program is good for surprises that come along that others share in their web quests.
